When Timothy Owoeye emerged as the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, there were serious concerns that he may go on to drag the exalted office in the mud. And three years after those concerns were made, Owoeye proved them right.

That was the first thing that ran through my mind after seeing a picture of him and some officials in the Gboyega Oyetola government sweeping the streets in Ilesa earlier today. It was an unbelievable sight and a big turn-off for any conscious citizen.

In his thinking, he must be playing politics, but the simple truth is that, that was dumb. As the Speaker, Owoeye heads the legislature, and by that, should not be subjecting himself to such public ridicule in the name of politics.

The disturbing thing about Owoeye’s show of shame isn’t just that he showed his gross lack of appreciation of the position he currently holds but confirms the widespread belief among Osun people that he was just an appendage of Oyetola. Because as the pictures clearly showed, Owoeye’s posture seriously questions the concept of a check.

In his thinking, he must be playing politics, but the simple truth is that, that was dumb. As the Speaker, Owoeye heads the legislature, and by that, should not be subjecting himself to such public ridicule in the name of politics.

No matter how you look at it, what Owoeye did was so low and he should be ashamed of himself. Given his public standing, Owoeye should know that there is an acceptable standard for conduct, and turning a street sweeper for politics, is never one of such.

If Owoeye is interested in helping his partyman, Oyetola, in swaying Ijesas for his re-election, he should simply be telling them what he (Oyetola) has done and what more he would do if returned. But since there is hardly a tangible achievement to canvass Ijesas with, including Owoeye gross failings, he chooses to distract them with the inanity conveyed in the viral pictures.

But he is mistaken as Osun people will not be swayed by shameless rhetorics. They have had enough of the failures of Owoeye’s party and will respond appropriately. While that is being awaited, it is important to impress on Owoeye to at least show some understanding that he can actually lead.

It is not in contest that Owoeye is incapable of the position he holds, especially when you consider the output of the House he presides over. Whether in terms of motions and bills passed, I am not sure any House in the history of Osun state has performed as woeful as the one that Owoeye currently presides.

Let Owoeye and his crew of jesters know that the Osun people are now wiser and will not let a failed government continue, no matter the antics. Owoeye can enjoy his show of shame till when Osun people end this misrule. And I can promise him, it is only a few weeks away.
